Efficient recovery and recycling/upcycling of precious metals using hydrazide-functionalized star-shaped polymers

There is a growing demand for adsorption technologies for recovering and recycling precious metals (PMs) in various industries. Unfortunately, amine-functionalized polymers widely used as metal adsorbents are ineffective at recovering PMs owing to their unsatisfactory PM adsorption performance. Herein, a star-shaped, hydrazide-functionalized polymer (S-PAcH) is proposed as a readily recoverable standalone adsorbent with high PM adsorption performance. The compact chain structure of S-PAcH containing numerous hydrazide groups with strong reducibility promotes PM adsorption by enhancing PM reduction while forming large, collectable precipitates. Compared with previously reported PM adsorbents, commercial amine polymers, and reducing agents, S-PAcH exhibited significantly higher adsorption capacity, selectivity, and kinetics toward three PMs (gold, palladium, and platinum) with model, simulated, and real-world feed solutions. The superior PM recovery performance of S-PAcH was attributed to its strong reduction capability combined with its chemisorption mechanism. Moreover, PM-adsorbed S-PAcH could be refined into high-purity PMs via calcination, directly utilized (upcycled) as catalysts for dye reduction, or regenerated for reuse, demonstrating its high practical feasibility. Our proposed PM adsorbents would have a tremendous impact on various industrial sectors from the perspectives of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Sustainable Development and Underexplored Topics in Canada’s Energy Transition

Canada’s energy system is undergoing a fundamental shift, which will change how Canadians produce and consume energy. The success of Canada’s energy transition will be influenced by the ability of energy practitioners to manage the tensions and trade-offs in a variety of topics. The purpose of this research was to identify topics that are relevant to Canada’s energy transition and to identify the concepts that energy practitioners are using to manage the tensions and trade-offs in these topics. According to in-depth interviews with Canadian energy practitioners in 2021, the two most important topics in Canada’s energy transition are climate change and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. In addition, according to a 2021 focus group with Canadian energy practitioners, three relevant and underexplored topics in Canada’s energy transition are environmental rights, a systemic reduction in energy consumption, and learning from the energy transition in other countries, notably, Germany. These three underexplored topics were studied by completing additional in-depth interviews in 2022 and 2023, and a causal loop analysis in 2023. This research suggests that the concepts of sustainable development and multi-level perspective are complementary, can increase understanding of important and underexplored energy transition topics, and can generate solutions to complex sustainability challenges.

Core‐Shell Zeolite with Confined Nickel Particles as Prominent Catalyst for the Hydrogenation of Maleic Anhydride

Transformation of maleic anhydride (MA) into succinic anhydride (SA) through the development of high‐performance catalysts is an appealing approach from a sustainable development perspective. Herein, a core‐shell catalyst with silicate‐1 supported and MCM‐41 encapsulated nickel was prepared, which exhibited extraordinarily high MA conversion (99.8%) and SA selectivity (99.9%). Detailed structural characterizations and catalytic evaluation demonstrated that the core‐shell catalyst derived from the liquid deposition method is a hierarchically porous material with tunable shell thicknesses, possessing strong interaction between Ni particles and the supports. Key to this success is the MCM‐41 shell that covered the defects such as silanol nests on the surface of the silicate‐1 zeolite, diminishing both the surface and intra‐particle diffusion barriers, thus the specially‐designed catalyst achieved high activity under rather mild conditions (100 °C, 3.0 MPa), which is 59% higher than the conventional silicate‐1 supported Ni catalyst. Furthermore, the mesoporous MCM‐41 shell plays a crucial role in minimizing the leaching and sintering of Ni particles, thereby bolstering catalytic stability. Overall, the research provides a new approach for the rational design to optimize the performance of hydrogenation catalysts and introduces a novel idea to enhance the activity and stability of Ni‐supported catalysts.

Effects of carbon emission trading system on corporate green total factor productivity: Does environmental regulation play a role of green blessing?

Extant studies focus on the impact of environmental regulation on regional economic growth or environmental pollution, and a lot of research outcomes have been made. However, from the perspective of corporate green sustainable development, the question of whether carbon emission trading represents a “green blessing” remains unclear. To address this issue, we employ a staggered difference-in-differences model to investigate the effects and mechanisms of the carbon emissions trading pilot policy (CETPP) on the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of listed manufacturing companies in China. Our results demonstrate that: a) CETPP can effectively promote corporate GTFP, and the robustness of this result is verified through a series of checks; b) the mediating role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance is critical in the relationship between CETPP and corporate GTFP, with environmental and governance performance serving as two key transmission channels; and c) CEO green experience and public environmental concern both play the moderating roles on the relationship between CETPP and GTFP; d) CETPP has a stronger positive impact on GTFP of private enterprises and enterprises in the maturity life cycle; and e) CETPP has a spatial spillover effect on GTFP, and the effect will decay as spatial distance increases. Our study offers both theoretical and practical implications for enterprises to achieve their green economic development objectives, so as to promote China's high-quality development.

Food Waste Management Model Through The Leadership of Women Entrepreneurs in a Sustainable Development Perspective (Study of Entrepreneurs Women's Culinary in Manado City)

The waste production is expected to continue to increase every year in proportion to the increasing population of Manado City. The influential role of women when combined with waste problems ranging from preventing waste generation to processing it is considered capable of realizing the SDGs points mentioned above. The purpose of this study is to analyze the leadership style of female culinary entrepreneurs in Manado City, to analyze waste management regulations, especially culinary waste in Manado City, and to formulate a food waste management model through the leadership of female culinary entrepreneurs in Manado City . The results of the study show that the leadership style of women in some female entrepreneurs is responsible, always directing, thinking with a cool head, fair, always discussing problems faced by employees, wise, firm, trying to give employees motivation and examples (becoming a role model). Progress in waste management is in the form of decentralized waste management, in which waste management is separated for each sub-district, so there are 11 sub-districts. In its management, it still prioritizes the 3R principles (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle). Strategies that can be carried out to make residents participate in waste management are forced waste sorting programs, improving quality or increasing the number of 3R TPSTs with good management, simple composting programs at business locations or household locations and realizing socialization programs to culinary entrepreneurs that in order to be able to run a business, if it violates it, sanctions can be given or its business license revoked.

How disaggregated natural resources rents affect financial development: From the perspective of sustainable development

Enhancing financial development has emerged as a paramount goal for nations worldwide, reflecting its pivotal role in fostering economic growth, stability, and prosperity. A developed financial system is inevitable for achieving sustainable development in a country. Therefore, it is essential to take measures that promote financial development. Also, promoting financial development entails knowledge of the determinants of financial development. Therefore, the present study intends to investigate whether during the period from 1989 to 2021, whether coal, oil, and natural gas rents have any impact on financial development in China. To that end, we adopt the novel Fourier ARDL modeling. The results claim that oil rent escalates financial development in the long run, while gas and coal rent impede it. On the contrary, oil rent mitigates financial development in the short run, whereas gas and coal rent promote it. Thus, we direct several policy stances to promote financial development.

Study on the Demand and Supply of Cultural Space for Different Groups of People from the Perspective of Sustainable Community Development: A Case Study from the Hanzhong Section of the Hanjiang River Basin, China

Cultural space (CS) holds significant importance for inheriting regional culture, serving people’s lives, and boosting sustainable community development. In this study, based on the research case of the Hanzhong section of the Hanjiang River Basin (HSHRB), the demand and supply matching relationships between three groups of people, namely residents, employees, and tourists, and four types of CS—memorial or religious space (MRS), cultural heritage space (CHS), cultural facilities space (CFS), and cultural industries space (CIS)—is analyzed, with communities as the units. Findings: (1) The CS demand–supply matching relationship exhibited the spatial distribution characteristics of high value balance in urbanized areas, significant lag in suburban supply, and low value balance in rural areas. (2) For the CS demands of residents, employees, and tourists, the total supply was in a substantial shortage, in general balance, and in significant surplus, respectively. (3) There were significant differences in the fairness and adequacy of the demand–supply matching of the four types of CS, with MRS and CHS more equitable and better able to meet the needs of different regions and populations. (4) Six community types with significantly different demand and supply characteristics were classified based on the demand–supply relationship within the community and the supply environment of neighboring communities. They presented a spatial structure of circles outward in the order of high-value-balanced communities, deprived communities, insufficient-supply communities, low-value-balanced communities, and shared communities, with urbanized areas as the core. Deprived communities and shared communities have shown spatial dynamics of urban expansion and village decay, respectively, and they require urgent attention. The study employs a more systematic categorization of CS supply and a more diverse perspective of demand entities, offering new evidence for the equitable distribution of cultural resources among heterogeneous groups and regions. Ultimately, it presents strategies for optimizing demand and supply as well as policy recommendations for community governance, bringing fresh insights into promoting sustainable community development.

Preparation and fluorescence detection of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots/cotton fiber composites

From the perspective of environmental protection and sustainable development, fluorescent probes have been prepared using inexpensive raw materials for fluorescence detection in wastewater treatment. Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs)/cotton fiber composites were prepared by grafting N-CQDs onto the oxidized cotton fibers using a silane coupling agents. Through a series of characterizations using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), it was found that N-CQDs were loaded onto cotton fibers. In the N-CQDs/cotton fiber composite, the fluorescence rate of carbon quantum dots is higher, which is 17.2 %, and the detection limit is 1.21 μM. The optimum conditions for fluorescence detection of azo dye Chrome black T(EBT) with pH 8 and concentration 10 μM were studied. This method for the detection of EBT has advantages such as high sensitivity, simplicity, speed, reusability, and a high potential for application in wastewater detection.

Towards green governance and real economy development: how digital technology affects health human resource allocation?

ABSTRACT The adoption and integration of digital technology have profoundly reshaped societal and environmental governance within the healthcare sector. This study aims to explore the influence of digital technology development on the allocation of healthcare human resources, intending to contribute to the net-zero carbon process. Utilizing panel data from 30 provinces and cities across mainland China during the period 2011 to 2020, we computed three unique indices for health resource density. Employing the spatial Durbin model, our analysis unveiled a gradual augmentation in the overall level of healthcare human resource allocation in China due to the spatial impact of digital technology development. Robustness tests substantiated a noteworthy positive spatial spillover effect of digital technology, contributing to the augmentation of healthcare human resource allocation at the regional level. Heterogeneity results revealed a notably more pronounced promotional effect in the eastern region, contrasting with the central and western regions. From the perspective of sustainable development, the development of digital technology can contribute to the advancement of environmentally friendly healthcare by optimizing the allocation of healthcare human resources. In conclusion, this study offers valuable insights for China to formulate effective policies for healthcare human resource allocation, contributing to the attainment of sustainable development goals.

Opportunities, Challenges and Countermeasures of Low-carbon Economy Development from the Perspective of Sustainable Development

Countries all over the world have reached a consensus on developing a low-carbon economy with low emissions, low pollution and low energy consumption. As the largest developing country in the world, China's economic development is deeply dependent on fossil energy, and its social and economic development is in the stage of industrialization and urbanization. Only by developing a low-carbon economy can we cope with climate warming and realize green and sustainable economic development. On the basis of discussing the concept, background and development trend of low-carbon economy, this paper puts forward the inevitability of developing low-carbon economy in China. In view of the opportunities and challenges faced by China in developing low-carbon economy, this paper puts forward the corresponding measures for developing low-carbon economy in China.

Role of Climate Policies and Environmental Regulations for Business Growth: Evidence from Sustainable Development Perspective

This study aims to use updated data sets for China from 1990 to 2022 to study the relationship between business growth and environmental factors and regulations such as environmental policies, taxes, green technologies, and environmental revenues. The first study confirmed that none of the variables used was static in I(II), while the ADF and PP unit root tests proved that all variables were static at the level, and confirmed the first difference in the ARDL model. Results demonstrate that environmental taxes stimulate business growth, a phenomenon explained by the Porter Hypothesis, suggesting that effective regulations related to environment can spur innovation and efficiency. The significant influence of environmental revenues further illuminates the potential of the green economy. The findings underscore the need for governments and businesses to adopt stringent environmental regulations, promote green technologies, and exploit the burgeoning opportunities in the green economy. The interplay between environmental factors and business growth not only fosters economic prosperity (SDG 8) but also aids in combatting climate change and promoting sustainable industrialization (SDG 9, 13), offering a roadmap towards a sustainable future.

Space tourism: an industry with a future?

Research methodology The case is derived from secondary sources, including publicly available reports and information about all companies directly or indirectly engaged in the industry. No primary sources were available. Case overview/synopsis This teaching case is designed for students to demonstrate their mastery of industry-level analysis in the emerging space tourism industry. It allows students to understand what constitutes the industry within the broader space sector and to apply analytical tools such as PESTEL and Porter’s Five Forces, with the option to discuss strategic groups. Students gain insights into how the industry is evolving within its broader environment and how companies could respond or differentiate themselves. Information is also provided for students to consider the broader social impact of a relatively new industry from the perspective of sustainable development. Complexity academic level The case is written for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in strategic management courses. The case placement is ideally in conjunction with industry-level analytical frameworks such as Porter’s Five Forces, PESTEL analysis, strategic groups (optional) and industry life cycle. Most strategic management textbooks cover these concepts in the first few chapters. For example, “Strategic Management, 14th edition” by Hill, Schilling and Jones (2023) covers these topics in chapter 2. Given that space tourism is an embryonic industry dependent on technological innovation, instructors might also use this case in innovation or entrepreneurship-related courses. This case could also be used to address critical issues, such as sustainability, in tourism management courses.

Politics of Environmental Permit Law in Sustainable Development Perspective

<em>In light of UUPPLH Articles 38 and 39, which provide that environmental permits may be withdrawn by the TUN court, the unclear paradigm raises severe concerns about the validity of environmental permission as the subject of a dispute amongst state officials. The Job Creation Law really refers to an Environmental Feasibility Decree (SKKL) or a Statement of Environmental Management Commitment (PKPLH) that has been approved by the federal and local governments, depending on the kind of environmental approval. Buildings that comply with the Job Creation Law and have received environmental approval in the form of a product meet the conditions to be considered for consideration as permits, as stated in Article 39, paragraph (2).</em> <em>The vague paradigm substantially calls into doubt the validity of environmental permission as the topic of a State Administrative dispute, given Articles 38 and 39 of the UUPPLH, which stipulate that environmental permits may be canceled through the TUN court. Depending on the kind of environmental approval, the Job Creation Law really refers to an Environmental Feasibility Decree (SKKL) or a Statement of Environmental Management Commitment (PKPLH) that has been accepted by the federal and municipal governments. Construction that conforms with the Job Creation Law and that obtains environmental approval in the form of a product meets the conditions to be declared suitable for consideration as a permit, as stated in paragraph (2) of Article 39. </em>

From waste to resource: demystifying the policy challenges and identifying opportunities for a circular economy in Zambia

Policy plays a significant role in accelerating or hindering a circular shift; Governments can set long-term visions and drive legislative change to create an enabling environment. Reflecting the regional picture, Zambia is experiencing increasing waste burdens due to a growing population and economic development. The current management approach is linear, characterized by low collection rates, inadequate disposal, and limited waste revalorization. From a sustainable development perspective, how waste is managed impacts pressing issues such as climate change and public health. The concept of the Circular Economy (CE) has gained global and regional interest given its potential to transform how resources are viewed and managed. Circular strategies may help to reduce waste burdens and create local socioeconomic opportunities while safeguarding the environment. This qualitative study uses document review and expert interviews to explore the current waste management regime in Zambia and understand if and how circularity is embedded into the policy approach. The findings suggest that the CE is potentially highly relevant for Zambia, but there are various policy challenges that could impede its successful integration into the national agenda. These challenges relate to ownership and coordination; gaps in implementation and enforcement; a restrictive licensing approach; obstacles to innovation and new entrants; as well as the role of informal sector actors. The challenges point to opportunities to overturn these policy shortfalls, which also presents future research avenues.

Assessing the Drivers of Sustained Agricultural Economic Development in China: Agricultural Productivity and Poverty Reduction Efficiency

Poverty eradication is a crucial element of SDG 1. Whether the financial resources invested by the Government provide a critical impetus for deeply impoverished rural areas needs to be studied by quantitative analysis. Therefore, this study presents a theoretical analytical framework for agricultural production–government poverty reduction. It divides the poverty reduction process into two stages, agricultural production and poverty reduction, from the perspective of sustainable agricultural development. The comprehensive measurement and spatio-temporal evolution analysis of China’s agricultural production and poverty reduction efficiency are conducted using a novel dynamic two-stage DEA model, which incorporates non-expected factors. The study found that (1) China’s agricultural production and poverty reduction efficiency exhibit overall poor performance, characterized by two poles of differentiation. (2) The agricultural production efficiency score is higher in the northern region than in the southern region, while the poverty reduction efficiency score is higher in the eastern region compared to the western region. (3) The coupling and coordination between China’s production efficiency and poverty reduction efficiency are inadequate.

Corporate social responsibility in complex systems based on sustainable development

In recent years, sustainable development and the commitment of companies to social responsibility have been emphasized as a new concern for various industries. Considering this issue, for the first time, this study conducted a systematic review of the development of social responsibility from the perspective of industrial sustainable development (SD). To be more precise, this study investigated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with regard to the SD indicators in the mining industry. To do so, all articles published in this field from the beginning until the end of 2023 were extracted from the Scopus database through a detailed screening process. An evaluation of the selected papers in terms of CSR with respect to the indicators of SD revealed six major research themes: 1) the role of CSR in mining communities, 2) the role of CSR in mining companies, 3) the role of CSR in environmental control around mines, 4) the impact of CSR on stakeholders, 5) planning in the field of CSR in mining communities, and 6) CSR/sustainability reporting. All of these research themes are found to be directly associated with SD indicators (i.e., social, economic, and environmental indicators). At the end of the paper, research gaps in this area are introduced for further studies.

Recent advances in heavy metal/metalloid ion treatment from wastewater using nanocomposites and bionanocomposites

Wastewater remediation is of paramount importance for the water-stressed modern civilization from the perspective of sustainable development and the management of limited freshwater resources. Contaminants such as heavy metal and metalloid ions, toxic dyes, and pathogenic microbes present in the aquatic ecosystem have adverse effects not only on the environment but also on human health. Traditional wastewater remediation processes are costly, energy-consuming, and have less efficiency in removing pollutants from wastewater. Multi-phasic nanomaterials or nanocomposites have enormous potential for removing contaminants from water bodies. These materials have an enormous tunable surface area for interacting with the target toxicants and are extremely stable in the aquatic system, but they readily agglomerate. Many research groups have exploited biosorption, bioleaching, and bioprecipitation capacities of fungal hyphae for wastewater remediation. Recently, researchers have attempted to explore the synergistic effect of the bionanocomposite of fungal hyphae and nanomaterials for removing pollutants from wastewater. This bionanocomposite has already shown promise as a superior material for wastewater treatment and can easily be separated from the polluted water for reuse over several cycles. The bionanocomposite-mediated decontamination of water can lead to a total paradigm shift in wastewater management strategies.

Sustainable development performance in the semiconductor industry: A data-driven practical guide to strategic roadmapping

Sustainable development performance (SDP) in the semiconductor industry, it is necessary to form a data-driven practical guide to strategic roadmapping by using a sustainable balanced scorecard (SBSC) because SDP perspectives have been addressed for several years and need to be further assessed through performance achievement. Additionally, the industry faces challenges in integrating technological innovation and stakeholder collaboration into the sustainable development (SD) perspectives. In light of these challenges, this study strives to develop an SBSC-based practical guide to strategic roadmapping utilizing the SD causal model under uncertainty. To attain this objective, this study employed a hybrid approach comprising content, bibliographic and cluster analyses, the entropy weight method (EWM), and the fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) are used to validate the data-driven SBSC measures. The fuzzy synthetic evaluation–decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (FSE-DEMATEL) is used to develop the strategic roadmapping with interrelationships. The findings reveal that scientific and technological development, enhanced device performance, artificial intelligence, performance assessment and the Internet of Things are the main criteria that must be prioritized by decision makers for semiconductor SDP improvement. This study contributes to understanding the data-driven practical guide to strategic roadmapping for the semiconductor industry by using SDP data. Furthermore, by constructing a hierarchical framework and identifying prioritized key attributes that enhance SDP, this study makes a valuable contribution to the SD literature.
